Every month, MMCU sponsors a non-profit organization during our “jeans days fundraiser.” Employees have the option to donate a specified amount of money in return for the freedom to wear jeans on Fridays.  One of the companies we support is the 5 A’s Animal Shelter in Godfrey.

The Alton Area Animal Aid Association is a no-kill shelter for dogs and cats.  The company has been rescuing animals since 1956.  The core of their mission statement is “to provide shelter and care for the homeless and abandoned animals of the Riverbend area.  As a no-kill shelter, we provide a haven for these animals until they are adopted out to qualified homes.”

Their website contains a list of adoptable dogs and cats, complete with names and photos, for those looking to acquire a new pet.  They also have a satellite adoption center at Petco in Alton, where two animals are available to be viewed, cuddled, and adopted. 

“We would like to thank the community for their support over the sixty plus years we have been in business,” says Executive Director Richard Jun.  “We could always count on our community when things would really get tough, through financial support, food donations, coming out and volunteering at the shelter or thrift shop.”

There are many ways to help support 5 A’s.

• Shop at or donate items to their thrift store
• Drop off new cat or dog food at their bins in area Schnucks stores
• Purchase a “We Live Because You Give” T-shirt
• List them as your non-profit choice on Amazon Smile

It is also possible to donate items directly to the shelter.  Here is a list of items they need the most.

• Liquid laundry detergent
• Bleach
• Clorox wipes
• Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid
• Mr. Clean
• Paper towels
